Minggu 20 A slow week

This week was a little slow.  We spent several days at the Church working on various things.  We went out with the Sisters and Elders to do some visits with inactive families and new member visits.  We also went out with the Sisters for an afternoon when our appointment canceled and looked for some members who no one had seen in a long time.  We went to 4 different peoples addresses and didn't find anyone.  Unfortunately, this is all to common.  We are hoping to get them to try and make contact after they have missed two or three weeks, before they are completely lost. 
Our grandson, Dallin was baptized on Saturday.  We are so proud of him for his good choices.  We also taught English class Saturday afternoon.  It was interesting because we had 3 little girls, maybe 8 yrs old, and then our regular High School, College class combined.  We played short vowel bingo.  I made up different bingo cards with words that had short vowels in them.  Then they all got a card and a little bag of M&M's.  I said a word and Sis. Jibson wrote the word on the board with the Indonesian word next to it.  This was after they had tried to find the word first.  When we had a bingo they had to read me the words they had marked.  Some did make mistakes but we all had fun and we kept going with the same cards and words marked until everyone got a bingo and a snickers bar.  They had lots of fun and then we spent the last few minutes getting them to ask us questions in English.  They ask interesting questions.  Everyone likes to ask what our age is.  The girl that asked this time said, "Wow, you don't look that old."  Here so many die in their 40's and 50's and they really look their age or older.  Afterward we had a great conversation with 4 of the college students about American Universities vs Indonesian Universities.  We all talked for at least a half hour or 45 minutes after class.  None of our regular students are members of the church.
Today we went to church and had Branch Council meeting afterward.  Sister Emma, the Branch Pres.'s wife finally came back to church for the first time after having her baby.  It has been about 6 weeks.  The Chinese customs are interesting.  They don't go out of the house for the first 30 days after having a baby.  Sis. Emma is the YW President so she stayed for Council meeting.  She sat next to me and kept telling Rebecca (the baby) say hi to your grandma Tucker.  She mentioned the other night, "You will be here to see her start walking and running around, that is so good."  That is another good thing about being a Senior missionary we are in one place long enough to really see changes being made in a place and being able to watch converts grow in the gospel.

Minggu 19 Zone Conference in Jakarta and Sister trainers

Monday we all met with the Branch Mission leader.  He had moved their weekly meeting to Monday because of the Baptism on Sunday and the missionaries going to Toyo and Roni's house afterward.  Sister Hasibuan cooked lunch with Sister Jibson's and the Elders help.  Javanese food.  It was really good and not to spicy if you don't put the sambal sauce on it.  After the meeting and eating we went with the Sisters to visit Sis. Ezra.  She had been pretty shook up on Saturday when her regulator to her cooking gas tank leaked and then exploded.  Luckily no one was hurt and it wasn't as bad as we thought.  She was sleeping when we got there so the Sisters just went in for a minute and talked to her.  We then decided to go get her a new gas tank and we just happened to have a new regulator in the car.  We went back and Elder checked out her stove also to make sure it worked and didn't have any damage.  She was so happy she cried.  We then went home and got ready to go to Zone Conference in Jakarta.
Tuesday our driver picked us up in his bacek and took us over to the Sisters house to meet the driver taking us to the airport.  We still aren't comfortable with our driver driving that distance by himself.  It is an hour to hour and a half drive depending on the time of day and traffic.  We flew to Jakarta and we all went to the mission home where the President Donald met with all of us individually except Elder Tucker and myself. He asked us again if we would be disappointed if we were reassigned from PEF missionaries to MLS missionaries, which is what we have been doing.  We told him we didn't mind as long as there was someone there ready to replace the native couple when they are released in April.  He said they would have another native couple ready to go when the were released.  We got to meet with him together.  The Elders went out and brought back some lunch for everyone.  Elder Tucker and I went for a walk to find an orchid plant for him to buy.  We found one and then we caught a taxi to our hotel.  We walked to the mall near the hotel and met up with the two Senior couples in Jakarta.  We visited for a while and then Elder and I got some dinner and went back to the hotel.
Wednesday we went to Zone conference and were taught by the President Donald and his wife, also the Zone leaders and Ap's all did some training.  Everyone had been asked to prepare a 5 min. talk about Developing the Faith to Find and then he called on 6 people to give their talks.  I was one of them.  Four of the six were senior missionaries.  I was very nervous.  Elder leaned over and said Happy Anniversary! as it happened to be our 37th Wedding Anniversary.  We then all went into the other room and divided into 4somes and practiced loaning out Books of Mormon in only 5 minutes.  We then had lunch and then the Missionaries all got to watch Ephirams Rescue.  We then went back to the hotel.  After a few hours we walked to the Lucherini's(the welfare and Humanitarian couple) apartment (which happens to be next to the hotel) and had dinner with them and the Lisk's (the office couple who live in the same apartment complex) and played a game and just spent some time visiting with English speaking adults.
Thursday we flew home and got to our apartment about 3:30pm.  We rested for a while and then we walked to a mall not to far from us.  We bought a few books. Some in English and some in Indonesian.  Elder got Hobbit in Indonesian.  We got a few other things we needed and grabbed some dinner and then walked back to the apartment.
Friday we met with our Language coach and a study buddy to work on language.  Elder is doing really well with his language.  I need to get over my fear of saying something wrong and then maybe it will come easier.  We spent the after noon at the church after we had gone to the grocery store since we had let our kitchen get pretty empty since we were going to be gone.  We puttered and did some studying.  The Sister Trainers flew in last night to do splits with the Sisters today.  They are both from Sumatra but joined to church in Jakarta when they were out of high school.  Sister Jibson and Sister Sitimoron stopped by the church and we invited them to dinner and the other Sisters if they were free.  The sisters rushed off for one more appointment and while they were gone Sister Hasibuan and Sister Manalu showed up.  While we were all there visiting the son of the other councilor in the branch presidency showed up with a girl he introduced as his friend but we think she is a girlfriend or fiancé.  She is not a member but new some things about the church like the word of wisdom.  The Sisters took the opportunity and taught her.  We were able to sit in and bear our testimonies also about what was taught.  They challenged her to be baptized and she agreed and set a date the end of February.  They were so excited.  We then found out when the other sisters got back that a friend of Ruf's that we had visited last week had also committed to be baptized and that these to girls were cousins.  Coinsidence?  I don't think so!  We then took all the Sisters out to dinner but did not let them bring their duren into the car.  They had to keep it in their bike baskets.

On Saturday we went to the Church about noon and had English that afternoon.  We were going to go with the Elders to visit Toyo and Roni that night but they cancelled so we headed home and stopped at an Art Gallery that was on a side street we had looked at before and bought these two paintings for about a total of $85 US dollars or 1,000,000rp.









On Sunday I gave the opening prayer at church in Indonesian.  One of the speakers didn't show up so it is a good thing the other two went a little long but Pres. Rico was prepared to go speak if he had too.  There was a short meeting with the Branch Mission leader to go over the details of an activity they are putting on.  Elder finally finished with his meetings at about 2:30.  We were supposed to go out with the Sisters tonight but they cancelled.  We are rescheduled for Monday night.  They live about an hour away and are an inactive family I have talked about before. 
We love and miss all of our family and friends but know we are where we are supposed to be right now.

Minggu 18

Monday we walked down to the street, by our apartment, that has all of the toko's (stores) with fabric.  We found some white fabric so we can get some white pants made for Elder, so he doesn't have to borrow them for baptisms.  We then stopped for lunch at a resturant next to the apartment complex.  It was a bit pricey.  About 8 american dollars total.  Our views on what is expensive have sure changed.  Shortly after we got home the President Donald (the mission president) called to ask if we had heard that the volcano had erupted again on Sunday and that they had evacuated more people to evacuation sites.  There are now at least 33 sites for evacuees and over 20,000 people displaced.  There was lava that had come out this time.  He wanted us to research and find where we could go to offer our help with supplies and such.  We spent the afternoon doing research on the computers and then sending information that we found to our Mission Welfare/Humanitarian Missionaries.  That evening we remembered that the PMI(Red Cross Indonesia) office is just down the street from us.  We called the Elders and asked them if they could come over in the morning and go with us to the PMI office to interpret.  They said yes.

Tuesday morning we went to the PMI office with the Elders and met with two of the directors.  They really didn't know what was needed at that time but they were heading up there that afternoon to see how they could help.  We exchanged contact information and they gave us each a hat and a key chain.  We then went to the church and the Sisters met us there and we went to visit an inactive sister (early 20's) who had been very active until about a year ago when she had to start working on Sundays and when that stopped she had gotten out of the habit of going to church.  She had been avoiding to Sisters to this point.  She actually kept her appointment and it was great.  She still has a testimony but is nervous about coming back.  She promised us she would come on Sunday. 
Wednesday we met with our language coach and then spent the afternoon at the church.  The sisters went with us to the tailors so Elder Tucker could have his pants made.  We then went with the Sisters to visit a member who joined the Church in Malaysia.  We found out she has only been back while she is waiting for a new work permit to go back to Malaysia.  There are more and better jobs there.  So she will be leaving in a few weeks.
Thursday we picked the Sisters up and went to visit Sister Desni. I mentioned her in my last post. First we stopped and picked up Sister Ezra so she could go with us.  We found her at home and we had a good visit.  We looked at lots of photos of members from years earlier.  We also showed her the John Tanner story video on my computer.  She said she has made a New Years resolution to start coming back to church.  We hope so.  We stopped at the store to get a few things to tide us over until we leave for Jakarta on Tuesday.
Friday we had District meeting and then ate lunch at the church.  Elder Tucker and the Elders went to visit PMI and see if they had gotten any information since we hadn't heard from them yet.  They actually came back with a list of every evacuation site and the heads of households and number of children and infants and pregnant women and a list of their needs.  It was very complete.  We sent it on to the Humanitarian Missionary couple and they were going to send it to Hong Kong for their approval.  When we take the supplies we donate to the PMI they will mark all of it from the Church and will also put a church decal on their ambulances.  We are just waiting to hear  back.  We then went with the Elders to an appointment in the Jungle.  It is where we have to park and walk about 15 minutes into the jungle.  I posted a picture a few months ago when we last went with them.  Jesse is a 16 yr old who wants to join the church but his parents won't let him.  His older brother and sister are both members.  Well, Jesse wasn't home so we had to turn around and walk back out.
Saturday we went to the church and the guy who cuts the grass came.  It was quite interesting watching him.  He is very fast.  We also did a few things and then taught English.  We started with 3 students about 15 minutes late and by the end we had 7.  Indonesians are not known for being on time.  One of the students is Sister Hasibuan, one of our Missionaries.  She is supposed to be learning English also.  When we get together we try and speak, her in English and me in Indonesian.  Sometimes it works.  We both use our Electronic dictionaries alot.  We made sure the font was full as we have a baptism tomorrow.

Sunday the Branch President was gone so Elder Tucker had his first time conducting a meeting.  He did very well.  He has been practicing for weeks.  Also, the two people who were challenged to come back to church came.  We were so excited.
 TOYO AND RONI WERE FINALLY BAPTIZED!!!  After church we had our baptism.  Elder was the one who baptized them.  President Rico was supposed to baptize one of them but he had a work training.  These boys are great.  They are destined for great things.  The advisary has been working over time to keep them from getting baptized.  Their original date for baptism was Dec. 15.  Then an Aunt passed away and it would have been disrespectful to have a party then.  Then their Grandmother gets really sick and they have to go to Jakarta to be with her for a few weeks.  They got back this week.  Today we got to Church and the water in the font had dropped about 6 inches so we had to add more water quickly before church started and then about a half hour before church is to start the power goes out.  Elder Tucker quickly gets out the generator so we have power.  I goes back on about 10 minutes before the meeting is to start.  Their Mom (who is very supportive and wants them to get baptized) even came to church and was there for all of the meetings.  We always do baptisms right after church so there are alot of people there.  Some can't afford to travel to church more than once a week.  After the baptism Toyo and Roni's mom had a celebration for them.  It was mostly a meal and visiting.  When most of the people had left but those of us from church and some family we did a short Family Home Evening (Malam Keluarga).  It was great and the seminary teacher was there and at least 5 of the youth, all the missionaries and the Elders Quorum President.  It was a long but great day.  We also had some ash from the volcano yesterday and today on cars that we drove by.  The wind must have changed as it was blowing the other way before.  It continues to to have small eruptions.

This is Agus, we told you about him in an earlier post.  It was his mother who past away and we went to the funeral.  He is preparing his mission papers and they should be sent in soon.  Today he told us that we are his step father and mother.  We like to think of it more as an adoptive son.  He is a very special person and has a strong testimony that he shares.  We are so lucky to have many wonderful youth, in this branch, who have been through much in their short lives.  We love them all.  As we love you all, also.

Minggu 17 New Years

Monday, Took Sister Tucker and the sister missionaries up to the Manullang's home for a Relief Society activity, which was planned to go for hours and hours.  It is a tradition to do lots of cooking for the New Year for family and friends. Elder Tucker and Elder Murphy left us there and headed back to the church, they stopped at a nursery, so Elder Tucker could see about buying a couple of potted plants to put out on our terrace patio, as you look out our window there are only a couple of green areas, mostly you just see fairly ugly buildings,  so now the greenery on the porch softens the view a little.  We have Elder Murphy here for couple of days, while his companion is attending meetings in Jakarta.

On Tuesday, since we wouldn't have a driver tomorrow, we had him take us to the store so we could do some grocery shopping, and buy some things to fix a door at Elders house.  In the afternoon we went looking for Samuel Hutagalung, never found  him, but did locate the area where he now lives, because while we were driving around looking for the address, we got a call from Nefi Zebua, who happens to know the area where he lives.  We (Elders & Sisters) taught the neighbor's to the Mendrofas, and delivered a letter to the Mendrofa's from their missionary son (he emails Elder and he prints it and gets it delivered to them somehow.  Then we followed one of the girls that we had been teaching to a restaurant where several of them are cooks, so we could have dinner, our driver was very nervous about where we went to eat, he did not want to leave the car, it was in a gated & guarded community, with lots of Chinese, which is what made him nervous I believe.  Which is unfortunate, because the food was very good, he may be nervous on more occasions in the future.  That night there were lots of fireworks at midnight visible from apartment, there was just a large arch about 180 degrees with fireworks continuosly for about 40 minutes or so.

Wednesday, We gave our Driver the day off, and Sister planned to stay in the apartment to pay bills, send a note to President Donald and update her blog.  Well we stayed in the apartment all day, and as the day was about over Elder was about ready to climb the walls.  He told Sister that it was unlikely that she would be able to convince him to stay in all day again.

Thursday, We spent the morning at the church, found the tools and took the gate wheels off to see what the problem was with it.  The bearing were missing from the wheels and the bolt holding the wheel in place was almost cut in half because of the wheel turning on the bolt.  So asked our driver if he knew where we would be able to find the wheels for the gate, he responded "yes" and away we went, well "yes" doesn't really mean he knows where to go look, he regularly says he knows the way somewhere and in reality he has a general idea, like he knows its north of where we are, and then he will stop and ask people along the road if they can help him find the place.  Such was the case again, we drove around a "pasar" (an open-air market) with mostly fruit and vegitable stands, then located a shop on one of the main roads, and sure enough they had exactly what we needed, what we would have paid $30 for in the states cost us $5.50 here (3" metal wheels with bearings, bolts, washers and nuts). Elder had brought clothes that he could do dirty work in, which was good, he was dripping wet when they finished.  Since he was wet and dirty, and because no one had been in the building for a few days, and the water line out of the tank leaks there was no water for the building, he thought he would go up and work on the water tank, before he started on the tank, he got the dirt off the part of the roof where it collects over time, enough to fill a couple of gunny sacks, using a trash can from the building, which he would hand down to Sister Tucker so she could take it down stairs to empty.  After getting all the dirt and debris off the roof, he looked into what he could do the fix the leak, not having any of the correct tools to do the work with he finally decided to use some electrical tape and just wrap it around the water line between the nut and the tank exterior, the nut had been locked in place with a cement of some kind.  Surprisingly it stopped the leak, now we will see how long it will last, Elder said he would take it, he didn't expect it to work in the first place, he just hoped it would slow the leak down.  In the afternoon we went out and visited with Bro. Simanjuntak with the Elders, and encouraged him to try and attend church this coming month.  Elder was able to get the email address for the missionary who baptized him years ago, and got a response from him, so he can get the two of them connected again.   Elder is spending time trying to reconnect members with those who baptised them, especially the struggling ones.  Then went out trying to locate Angelia Simbiring Milala, talked to a lot of people along the street she may have lived on a while back, we even found a family near buy that had daughters about her age and they had the same family names of "Simbiring Milala" but in the end we were unable to get any good leads on her.  Once at home Elder used what information he had for her and located what he thinks is her in facebook, according to it she now lives in the Central African Repulic (CAR), now we know that seems a little unlikely, but thats what it said.  But the photo is of what looks like a 19 year old, and she attended High School near where the old address we had for her.  Her employeer is an Indonesian company in Riau, which is just south of Singapore, that has additional offices in CAR, so we think it is her.

Friday,  we attended DDM this morning, then joined the Elders and Sisters for lunch, which the Elders prepared, "Sate" which is chicken strips (or could be beef) on a stick grilled with a teriyaki like sauce and rice, of course, then you put a peanut sauce over it.  While they were cooking Elder worked on a concrete door jamb so we could re-hang a door for their bathroom.  That evening we went out and visited with Brother & Sister Kiki, Bro. Kiki was the previous Branch Pres. for 13 years.  Elder brought a snake fruit home from the Kiki's, as He have not tried it yet, when he did it was a little like a soft apple, Sister Tucker tried it also but she is not as adventurous as Elder. This week we discovered that we will be spending our anniversary in Jakarta for Zone meeting,  There is also some training that we know President Donald would like to have President Rico attend, but he may not be able to go, so Elder may see about staying a couple of extra days so that he can attend and bring the information back to Pres Rico.  Also discovered that Feb 4 - 7 we will be attending a Senior Missionary Conference in Bali, so Sister Tucker is excited about that, it is one of the places she wanted to make sure and visit.  Since it is not in Jakarta we will have to pay for part of the airfare, and our own hotel expenses, the original arrangements were $250 a night at the Hyatt, but that got changed to the Novatel for $150 a night.  We were going to go see Toyo and Roni but they are still in Jakarta, visiting their ill grandmother.  It seems like there a lots of obsticles being placed in their way to keep pushing off their baptism.  We think they will be really strong, great additions to the branch and Satan knows that.

Saturday at noon went to the church for building clean up.  As our driver started to wash the van it started to pour, and it rained good for some time.  Got the cleanup finished, and did some studying.  Elder then went over to see if the barber shop was open, as they had been closed the past few time he checked over the past week.  They were open, the guy who cut his hair cut it more like a flat top than he would have liked, but he said he could live with it.  Everyone is still out of town so we had about as many people at English as we expected "0".   Once the Elder's showed up Elder had them load a surplus desk into the back of the van, so we could use it at the apartment.  They also stopped by later that evening to bring it up from the apartment basement.  While we got a number of things accomplished this week, not the most productive weeks as far as getting out and working with people, but we did find two good leads for a couple of branch members.

Sunday we took the angkot to church again and Pres. Rico took us home.  Toyo and Roni's baptism was pushed back another week as they weren't home yet from being with their Grandmother.  Elder had a Branch Presidency meeting that was supposed to be short but lasted 2 hours.  Sister Tucker was given a Visiting Teaching route with Sis. Teng as her companion.  She speaks a little english so we can communicate some.  We will visit a Sister that moved back here from Malaysia, where she joined the church.  She speaks English quite well.  She is Young Adult age and we have met her once, at the christmas party.  The other, Sister Desni, is older, was active until she was offended and she has been sick.  We will see how it goes.

Minggu 16 Christmas

Sunday, President Donald attended Medan Branch today and called a new counselor in the presidency.  The other counselor had been serving in several positions for the last 5 years and was a little more than burned out.  Following church we (all of the missionaries) took a couple of taxies to Pres Rico & Sister Emma's for their new daughter's 12th day visit.  Chinese tradition, for friends and family to visit and meet the new baby on the 12th day after birth.  So we visited and had dessert with the family.  Then Pres. Rico dropped the young missionaries off at the Church and took us back to our apartment.

Monday,  we shopped for the food we would need for Christmas meals to feed the Missionaries and we got them some candy like M&M's, snickers, Dove which is more expenxive than the knockoffs they usually can afford.  We also bought the stuff for Esbuah (ice fruit), which is a drink that one of the members makes here and it is really good.  Did we forget to mention that Elder Tucker got a call telling him to purchase a couple of bikes for the sisters. They have been doing a happy dance ever since and so we took them out on Monday to look for bikes.   Sister Jibson, who loves anything outdoors kept looking at the really good bikes.  We had a budget and we had to keep reminding her that other Sisters not so experienced would be following to use the bikes, which she knew but still wanted to dream.  The bike shop even put the bikes together so Elder didn't have to.

Tuesday, Sister Tucker stayed at the apartment and got preparations underway to feed the missionaries.  Elder Tucker went to church for a presidency meeting, and to do some work on the sound system.  He partly took apart and reassembled the podium with a new microphone cable, and set some rat traps, so they wouldn't eat through the cables quite as often.  Got back to the apartment about 5:30 PM, and helped finish a few things.

Wednesday, got fruit prepared for making Esbuah (which is actually quite a lot of work) and Breakfast & dinner for Missionaries.  Time will tell if we can get all of the ingredients in the states or not (most likely not).  The Sister Missionaries called home and we played a different version of monopoly, which uses a deck of monopoly cards for everything, and watched The Hobbit.  We were also sent a package for each of the young missionaries from the mission home.  They loved it.  A white shirt, tie, socks and some toiletries for the Elders and a Skirt and toiletries for the Sisters.  New clothes are always good for them here.  The water is not the cleanest and everything is done with cold water so clothes get dingy and not real clean quickly.

Thursday the Missionaries arrived at about 8:30 AM, finished preparation of breakfast, they called parents on Skype, visited until about 1:00 & headed off for a afternoons worth of work.  It is really slow here the two holiday weeks as most people go back to their Kampong (village) for the holidays.  Some neighborhoods are cleared out except for the Muslims.  We re-watched "The Hobbit" with Indonesian subtitles and called it language study time, I'm sure it would be better if it were in Indonesian with English subtitles, but most movies aren't available that way. Not that we have seen many, okay this was the first, the rest have been church movies.  Sister Tucker and Sister Hasibuan are learning language together.  She is learning English and Sister Tucker Indonesian so Sister Hasibuan speaks to her when she can in English and Sister Tucker tries to answer in Indonesian and vise versa.

Friday, DDM at the church in the morning, then ate lunch.  Had to go to the store so we could feed the missionaries on Sunday.  I am told that even more people go home to see family during Ramadan (moveable, but usually in August).

Saturday, we got to the church and it had already been cleaned and setup.  Did some record cleanup on the Branch computer.  Also worked checking out the projector, sound system and computer interfaces, and all worked well, so we should be able to use them tomorrow to show the Christmas Devotional.  Lots of people have gone home to villages where their parents live, so there was no one in English this evening.  Sister Tucker made a cake for Elder Costners birthday.  We ate that and then we went out to eat with the missionaries, to celebrate Elder Costner's birthday, he was buying.

Sunday, we had more at Church than we expected, about 45. During Sunday School they showed the Christmas devotional that had been dubbed in Indonesian.  We then had Branch Council meeting.  Pres. Rico gave us a ride home since we ride to church in our drivers Angkot and we let him go home after church to take his children.  We then either get a ride from Pres. or call a taxi to get home.  We had the Missionaries over for tacos, with homemade tortillas and salsa.  We also had mexican rice.  Sister Hasibuan felt better about having rice with this meal since we hadn't earlier in the week.  Indonesians need to have rice with almost every meal or it is not quite right.
